Premier partnership gives new opportunities
Over the last 10 years, gap personnel’s Wrexham branch has supplied Premier Decorations, one of the UK’s largest designers and importers of Christmas Decorations, with temporary and permanent personnel.
Annually, Premier Decorations has a four month peak period, between the months of July and October, in which they require skilled warehouse operatives with relevant qualifications in the use of manual handling equipment.
Currently there is a large skill shortage within the warehouse and logistics sector across the UK and in particular the North Wales area. Wrexham branch manager Adam McGrath identified a need for action to ensure that the long-term interests of Premier Decorations were sustained as well as addressing the skill shortage in the local area.
In partnership with Premier Decorations, Wrexham Jobcentre and North Wales Training, gap personnel have created and implemented a tailor-made work placement programme; the programme is aimed at giving those in long-term unemployment an opportunity to gain the relevant skills and experience required, to begin a career within the warehouse and logistics sector.
The process started back in April of this year in which jobseekers registered their interest with either the Job Centre or North Wales Training. Two interactive open days were held on site at Premier Decorations in which candidates were invited to see first hand a busy warehouse operation. From this, 10 candidates applied to be considered for the placement and all 10 were given the opportunity. The candidates were started in stages with each individual receiving a tailor-made work programme as well as a designated mentor from the senior team at Premier.
All candidates will be offered temporary contracts with Premier Decorations upon completion of the programme as well as on-going mentoring and support for the duration.
gap personnel's Wrexham Branch Manager, Adam McGrath added; "Over recent years, I have noticed that there is a serious skills shortage within the warehouse and distribution sector in the north Wales area. Working closely with the Wrexham Job Centre and North Wales Training, we have managed to provide an opportunity for 10 long-term unemployed candidates to get themselves back into the workplace. This opportunity has given these candidates a great platform to develop themselves and gain stable employment within a sector that is in need of their skills."
If you think your company would benefit from a work placement programme and would like to discuss your needs in greater detail please contact your local gap personnel Branch Manager or Regional Director.
