Today is International Women's Day!

To celebrate, we are creating a chain whereby some of our leading ladies within the business nominate and share stories of their inspirational females. If you are nominated, share a story of your inspirational female and give us some background and detail as to why by commenting on the post.

Meet Susan, our Bid Manager from Liverpool.
 

Why do you think it is important to celebrate this day?

I think it goes without saying that they UK has taken huge steps in addressing gender inequality, but for me it’s the obvious progress we’ve made that makes International Women’s Day so important; it seems so long ago to some that it was perfectly legal to pay a woman less than a man for doing the same job that they underestimate the deeply ingrained reaches of gender inequality. I don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but I watched the Serena Williams Nike advert the other day. She narrates: “If we show emotion, we’re called dramatic. If we want to play against men, we’re nuts. And if we dream of equal opportunity—delusional. When we stand for something, we’re unhinged. If we’re too good, there’s something wrong with us. And if we get angry, we’re hysterical, irrational, or just being crazy.” Yes, we’ve come a long way, but unfortunately I know Serena’s words will resonate with many women in the world of business – there’s still work to be done. #BalanceForBetter 

Who inspires you and why?

Nomination 1: Vicky Harris - Regional Director (gap personnel group)

From the gap family, Victoria Harris. Vicky embodies our company values and is the definition of leading by example. She started with gap 10 years ago as an Account Manager in Liverpool, and her continued success and commitment has most recently resulted in her promotion to Regional Director of our North West Region. As someone lucky enough to have worked closely with her for 7 of those 10 years, I know she has taken something from each role throughout her development journey, meaning she is now able to demonstrate real empathy with every individual in every role across the North West. She is a positive energy when the going is good and when the going gets tough, and actually enjoys difficult client meetings, as it challenges her to find the best solution for them (though I probably shouldn’t advertise that on LinkedIn – soz Vic!). It’s not simply holding a ‘Director’ title that makes Vicky an inspirational female role model within our business, it’s everything she does to deliver above and beyond what is expected of her as a Director.

Nomination 2: Emma Warden - CSR Manager (Canary Wharf Group)

From my family (or as good as), Emma Warden. This power woman, who I met on our first day at primary school, is now the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of Canary Wharf Group. I remember when she had her first interview with them for a position as Community and Sport Coordinator, and she told me the feedback she’d received was that they liked the fact she didn’t BS – when they asked about her experience in areas she hadn’t yet been exposed to she didn’t try and wing it, she was honest. Now this could just be the fact that she is from Yorkshire, and as all biased Yorkshire folk know we have no time for BS, but knowing her I’m convinced they were won over by her genuine authenticity, and obvious commitment and enthusiasm to gain the skills and experience required. Over the last 8 years she has risen through the ranks to her current position, and is now one of 22 candidates from the built environment sector selected for the UK Green Building Council’s Future Leaders Programme. My inspirational, northern woman, leading the way in the big city.
