Summary:
We are looking for a Photonics Design Engineer with a diverse skill set to join our Optics and Fibre Optic R&D team in the Fibre-Optic Manufacturing centre based in Torquay. As part of a global R&D team, you will be working on the development of a range of novel fibre-optic based products including photonic components, modules and optical sub-systems for a wide range of applications such as bio-medical imaging, industrial sensing, optical telecommunications and aerospace. The job will involve a range of tasks related to the design, prototype assembly and test of optical, fibre-optic and photonic based components and sub-systems. This position requires the individual to have a well rounded background with a broad knowledge base in fibre-optics, photonics and related technologies.


THE ROLE:

  • Design and develop optical and photonic components, modules and sub-systems
  • Support design modification and engineering changes to existing products
  • Responsibility for product development and performance to deliver robust designs to Manufacturing and Product Engineering with full understanding of product performance through modelling and verification testing
  • Contribute to cohesive product development strategy which provides the site with the market offering to meet business growth objectives
  • Exploit fibre optic and opto-electronic components to develop cutting edge products, working within multidisciplinary team that includes mechanical and electronic and firmware design engineers
  • Active involvement in prototype build – including fibre-optic splicing, mechanical/electrical assembly and opto-electronic test
  • Develop and execute on test plans for functional and environmental verification of photonic components and systems and verify compliance to target specifications
  • Review, assess and create specifications, test procedures, engineering Change Request (ECRs), technical reports and other documentation associated with the design, build and tests of products (NPI Porcess)
  • Present results clearly and concisely for both internal and external customers
  • Develop strong working links with technical and business experts
  • Deliver technical and management reviews and produce reports resulting from technical activities, executing technical projects on time and under budget
  • Responsibility for site Laser Safety liaising with site Health and Safety


PERSON SPECIFICATION –

  • Knowledge in fibre-optics, photonics and general optics
  • Knowledge in optical design tools, e.g Zemax Optics Studio
  • Design in Engineering or Physics
  • Msc or PhD in an optics/photonics related field
  • Hands on experience building and testing fibre-optic components, systems or opto-electronic modules
  • At least 3 years of relevant industrial experience
  • Commercial experience in the product development of fibre optics or laser products
  • Experience in testing and qualification of components and sub-systems based on Telcordia, MIL-STD or ESCC/ECSS
