Impress from day one – top tips for an impactful workplace debut

Congratulations - you’ve landed your new role! Now that you've secured that all important placement, it's time to make a positive impression on your first day. After all, first impressions matter! Here are some tips to help you shine on your first day.

1.    Plan for your shift start times

Punctuality is important so plan your routine to ensure you arrive a little early and certainly well ahead of your shift start time. This not only shows that you're eager to begin, but also allows for any unexpected delays. Remember that there might be public transport timetables that work for start times but not finish times, or vice-versa, so ensure you prepare your commute in advance.

2.    Dress appropriately

You’ll know ahead of your first shift exactly what you need to wear, and if you’ve attended an induction you may already have your uniform and PPE. Make sure you’re aware of any rules relating to uniform, dress codes, and PPE, so you’re safe to begin your work placement – you may not be able to begin work otherwise. If you’re working in a food or drink production site pay particular attention to what items of clothing and PPE can be worn, and where, to comply with hygiene regulations.

3.    Listen and learn

Your first day is a great opportunity to soak up as much information as possible. Pay close attention during any training or information sessions, and don't hesitate to ask when you're unsure about something. Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question!

4.    Follow all onsite protocols

Familiarise yourself with safety protocols and guidelines right from day one. This not only protects you and your colleagues, but demonstrates your commitment to a safe working environment. In industrial settings especially, safety is paramount.

5.    Embrace feedback

If you receive feedback or suggestions during your first day, be open to it. Remember, everyone was new once, and constructive feedback is an opportunity for growth. Show your willingness to learn and improve by taking onboard any advice and reacting positively to it.

Your first day at a new job is an exciting opportunity to make your mark and become a valued member of the team. With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to making a great first impression that sets the stage for a successful career in the industrial sector. Best of luck!
