 £25,000 starting salary

A strong entry‑level opportunity for someone looking to develop CAD and engineering skills within a practical, hands‑on manufacturing environment.

Role Overview

The Junior CAD Technician will support the design and production of sheet‑metal lockers and associated components. The role involves producing accurate technical drawings, developing 3D models, and preparing manufacturing‑ready documentation that feeds directly into fabrication processes such as CNC machining, folding, welding, and assembly.

You’ll gain exposure to the full product lifecycle, working on both new product development and updates to existing designs, while building your CAD capability within a supportive engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • 2D & 3D CAD Modelling — Produce detailed drawings and models for locker bodies, doors, shelves, brackets, and internal components using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar software.
  • Fabrication‑Ready Drawings — Create sheet‑metal drawings including bend lines, tolerances, hole patterns and material specifications.
  • Design Revisions — Update existing designs based on engineering changes, customer requirements or production feedback.
  • BOM Creation — Generate and maintain Bills of Materials for new and existing products.
  • Manufacturing File Preparation — Prepare DXF and other required file formats for laser cutting and punching machinery.
  • Assembly Documentation — Produce clear assembly drawings and exploded views for production teams.
  • Quality & Compliance — Ensure all drawings meet internal standards, tolerances and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Cross‑Team Collaboration — Work closely with colleagues across engineering, production and assembly to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
  • Skill Development — Continue developing knowledge of sheet‑metal design, manufacturing processes and CAD best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • AutoCAD Experience with familiarity in SolidWorks or Inventor.
  • Sheet Metal Principles — Understanding of bend allowances, tolerances, material thicknesses and fabrication constraints.
  • Attention to Detail — Strong focus on dimensional accuracy, hole placement and part alignment.
  • Technical Communication — Ability to interpret and clearly convey engineering information.
  • Organisational Skills — Capable of managing drawing revisions and structured file systems.
  • Manufacturing Awareness — Willingness to learn processes such as laser cutting, folding, welding and powder coating.
  • Problem‑Solving — Basic understanding of root‑cause analysis techniques.
  • Team Collaboration — Ability to work effectively within a team environment.

Qualifications

  • Vocational or college qualification in engineering, product design, mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Any experience with sheet‑metal CAD or manufacturing environments is beneficial.
  • Ideal for someone at the start of their career seeking hands‑on experience, mentoring and long‑term development within a manufacturing setting.
