About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Waste Manager to lead and oversee all waste management operations within an NHS Trust. This role is vital in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient handling, transportation, and disposal of all healthcare waste streams across multiple clinical and non‑clinical areas.
You will play a key role in supporting environmental sustainability, infection prevention, and operational excellence, ensuring the Trust remains compliant with all relevant legislation and NHS waste management standards.
This will be a temporary to permanent role via Gap Personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the Trust’s waste management service, including clinical, domestic, hazardous, offensive, confidential, recyclable, and non‑recyclable waste streams.
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., HTM 07-01, Environment Agency guidelines, Duty of Care, Waste Regulations).
- Maintain strong working relationships with clinical teams, portering services, waste contractors, and Estates & Facilities.
- Develop, review, and implement waste policies and standard operating procedures.
- Drive improvements in waste segregation, recycling rates, and sustainability initiatives.
- Monitor service performance through audits, reporting, and quality checks.
- Lead training programmes for staff on waste management practices and compliance.
- Support procurement, contract management, and supplier performance.
- Ensure waste storage areas, collection points, and equipment meet safety and hygiene standards.
Requirements
- Experience in waste management, ideally within healthcare, NHS, or a large complex organisation.
- Strong understanding of healthcare waste legislation, HTMs, and environmental compliance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and influence others.
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving abilities.
- IOSH, Waste Management, or Environmental qualification desirable (or willingness to work towards).
- Experience managing contractors and service providers is an advantage.
