Catering Assistant (Pot Wash) – NHS

Location: Ystrad Mynach
Contract Type: Temporary
Hours: Monday to Friday, 3:00pm – 7:30pm
Start Date: Immediate Start
Reports to: Catering Supervisor / Catering Manager


Job Purpose

To support the hospital’s catering service by ensuring all kitchen utensils, pots, pans, equipment, and food preparation areas are cleaned to a high standard, maintaining hygiene, safety, and efficiency within the catering department.


Key Responsibilities

Pot Wash & Cleaning Duties

  • Wash all pots, pans, utensils, and catering equipment using industrial dishwashing appliances.
  • Hand‑wash items when required to ensure thorough cleaning.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pot wash area, sinks, and dishwasher units throughout the shift.
  • Ensure all cleaning tasks are completed according to NHS hygiene and infection control standards.

Kitchen Support

  • Assist with basic kitchen tasks such as putting away clean equipment and organising storage areas.
  • Support the catering team by ensuring equipment is readily available for food preparation and service.
  • Dispose of food waste and rubbish appropriately following hospital waste management procedures.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Work in line with national and local NHS food hygiene, COSHH, and health & safety policies.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow infection prevention and control protocols at all times.
  • Report any faulty equipment or hazards to the Catering Supervisor immediately.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work cooperatively with chefs, catering assistants, and supervisors to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all hospital staff.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing for long periods and lifting equipment.
  • Strong awareness of hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Reliability and good time‑keeping skills.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a catering, kitchen, or pot‑wash environment.
  • Knowledge of food hygiene or infection control procedures (training can be provided).

Additional Information

  • This role involves working in a healthcare environment and requires adherence to strict hygiene standards.
  • Uniform and training will be provided by the NHS catering team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to assist in other catering tasks when needed is expected.
