Role Type: Permanent

Gap Personnel is looking for a Recycling Team leader for one of our clients based in Severn Beach BS35.

Position:

  • This is a practical leadership role, not a desk based management role.
  • The post holder works alongside the team while setting daily priorities, standards and pace.
  • This role acts as the first line lead for the recycling department and reports into Operations Management.
  • The role supports compliance and audit readiness but does not own permits, licences, regulator relationships, budgets or formal outcomes unless specifically delegated.

What success looks like:

  • Daily work is planned, resourced and controlled, with clear priorities for the team.
  • Telecoms equipment is dismantled, sorted, labelled, recorded and moved into the correct reuse, recycling, recovery or disposal streams.
  • Holiday, absence and task cover are managed early enough to protect safety, output and service levels.
  • PPE, manual handling, workstation safety, housekeeping and material segregation standards are visible and consistent.
  • Records, labels, stock movements and disposal evidence are accurate enough to support traceability, audit and management review.
  • The team receives practical coaching and knows when to escalate issues or risks.

Key accountabilities.

1. Hands on recycling operations.

  • Work directly within recycling activity including dismantling, sorting, grading, handling, storing and preparing end of life telecoms equipment and recyclable materials.
  • Support correct identification and segregation of metals, plastics, printed circuit boards, batteries, reusable parts and controlled disposal items.
  • Keep materials in the correct bins, cages, storage locations or processing areas, with clear labelling in line with company process.
  • Support loading, unloading, internal stock movement, workstation preparation and safe handling where required.

2. Daily leadership, workload planning and team coverage.

  • Set daily priorities and allocate tasks based on workload, resource, skills, safety requirements and operational deadlines.
  • Organise practical cover for dismantling, sorting, labelling, stock movement, housekeeping, dispatch preparation and other key activities.
  • Respond to planned and unplanned absence by reallocating work, arranging cover or escalating resource risks promptly.
  • Maintain clear handover notes so the team understands priorities, cover arrangements, gaps and actions.

3. Coaching, standards and performance support.

  • Coach team members in safe dismantling, material segregation, tool use, equipment care, system discipline and quality standards.
  • Role model attendance, timekeeping, conduct, communication, safety behaviour and productivity.
  • Monitor KPI’s, accuracy and completion throughout the day and give practical feedback.
  • Escalate repeated performance, conduct, attendance, safety or training concerns factually to Operations Management.

4. Health, safety, environment and housekeeping.

  • Ensure PPE, manual handling, workstation safety, tool use and operational controls are followed.
  • Support safe handling of hazardous or sensitive components, including lithium-ion batteries and other controlled materials, in line with company procedure.
  • Stop or escalate unsafe work, poor storage, uncontrolled waste streams or practices that create risk.
  • Report incidents, near misses, non-conformances and process issues in line with company policies.

5. Quality, stock accuracy and continuous improvement.

  • Support accurate recording of materials, stock movements, recoverable items, disposals, processed equipment and work completed.
  • Use business systems, spreadsheets, labels, forms or approved records to maintain traceability and operational control.
  • Identify repeat errors, delays, unclear instructions or practical changes that could improve safety, flow, accuracy or output.
  • Provide factual updates on output, risks, delays, resource gaps, training needs, stock issues and operational concerns.

Required experience, knowledge and skills.

  • Practical experience in recycling, e-waste, telecoms equipment handling, warehouse operations, production, stock control or a similar hands on environment.
  • Confidence working with end of life telecoms equipment, out-of-box equipment, components and recyclable materials.
  • Safe and competent use of basic hand tools, workstations, handling equipment and manual handling methods relevant to the role.
  • Good working awareness of health and safety, PPE, housekeeping, material segregation and controlled handling requirements.
  • Ability to organise people and workload while maintaining output.
  • Attention to detail around labels, locations, stock accuracy, materials, customer requirements and system / record accuracy.
  • Basic IT capability, including business systems, scanning / recording tools, email, spreadsheets or operational reporting tools.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence to challenge poor standards constructively and escalate concerns when needed.

Decision making and authority

  • Allocate daily tasks and adjust workflow within agreed priorities.
  • Coordinate daily cover, task allocation and holiday / absence cover planning.
  • Pause work or escalate immediately where there is a safety, environmental, quality, customer or stock risk.
  • Provide practical coaching, correction and feedback during the working day.
  • Recommend process improvements, training actions or resource changes. Requires Management Approval.
  • Change company policy, compliance controls or customer requirements.
  • Approve budgets, pay, recruitment or commercial arrangements.
  • Own permits, licences or regulator relationships unless formally appointed.
  • Make formal employment decisions such as disciplinary or capability outcomes.
