Multi‑Skilled Craftsperson / Mechanical Fitter (Mechanical Bias)
Location: Blackpool (Blackpool Victoria Hospital & associated sites)
Contract Type: Full‑time, Temporary
Hours: Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week
Department: Estates / Facilities / Engineering
Reports To: Mechanical Supervisor / Maintenance Team Leader
Job Purpose
The Multi‑Skilled Craftsperson / Mechanical Fitter will provide high‑quality, safe, and efficient mechanical maintenance services across healthcare facilities. The role ensures the continuous operation of mechanical plant, equipment, and building services. This includes fault‑finding, repairs, planned maintenance, and supporting multi‑disciplinary trades to deliver a responsive maintenance service.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Mechanical & Building Services Maintenance
-
Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance on mechanical, HVAC, heating, ventilation, hot & cold water systems, pumps, valves, steam/condensate plant, and associated equipment.

Maintain and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and vacuum systems, and support water safety compliance including legionella control tasks.

Undertake fault‑finding on complex mechanical systems using cause‑and‑effect diagnostic methods.

Work from technical drawings, manuals, and engineering schematics.
Operational Support

Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies, ensuring continuity of service for critical building systems.

Liaise with internal staff, contractors, and external providers as required.

Ensure plant rooms, workshops, and equipment are operated safely and maintained to compliance standards.
Safety, Compliance & Documentation

Follow all statutory and regulatory guidance including Health & Safety at Work, COSHH, and Mechanical/Electrical safety codes.

Complete all maintenance reports, records, and certification accurately and on time.

Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work are followed.
Essential Experience & Qualifications
Experience
-
Minimum of 3 years post‑apprenticeship mechanical maintenance experience in building services, engineering, or industrial/heavy plant environments.
-
Experience with maintenance of:
- heating and hot water systems
- pumps and valves
- air handling units & ventilation systems
- steam/condensate systems
- mechanical plant and associated controls
-
Proven ability to work independently, prioritise workloads, and make decisions under pressure.

Experience interpreting technical documents and diagnosing mechanical faults.
Qualifications

Recognised Advanced Craft apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical Maintenance / Building Services.

Full and clean UK driving licence.
Desirable
-
Experience in NHS estates or healthcare environments.

Additional qualifications such as BTEC/HNC in a relevant technical discipline.

Competence mentoring junior staff or apprentices.
