Gap Personnel is delighted to be recruiting for an experienced Band 5 Electrician / Estates Technician on behalf of West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a dedicated Estates team responsible for maintaining the essential electrical infrastructure and engineering services that support patient care across the Trust. From power distribution and emergency systems to fire alarms, UPS systems and specialist healthcare equipment, your expertise will help ensure a safe and reliable environment for patients, visitors and staff.

The Role
As an Estates Technician (Electrical), you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, testing, installation and inspection of a wide range of electrical systems and equipment across the Trust estate.
Your duties will include:
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs on electrical systems and equipment.
- Diagnosing and rectifying complex electrical faults across critical healthcare facilities.
- Working on power distribution systems, lighting installations, generators, nurse call systems, fire alarms, intruder alarms, UPS/IPS systems and Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Undertaking fault finding on complex LV electrical networks and critical engineering systems.
- Providing technical support and guidance to colleagues, trainees, contractors and maintenance assistants.
- Assisting with engineering projects, shutdowns, refurbishments and new works programmes.
- Undertaking testing, inspection and monitoring of decontamination equipment, pressure vessels and associated plant.
- Supporting statutory compliance programmes and ensuring all work complies with relevant regulations and HTMs.
- Acting as an Authorised Person (AP) or Competent Person (CP) within designated disciplines following training and appointment.
- Issuing permits to work and supporting risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Liaising with contractors, manufacturers and specialist suppliers regarding maintenance and equipment requirements.
- Participating in the Estates on-call rota and responding to emergency situations outside normal working hours.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- NVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation or equivalent.
- City & Guilds 2360, 2330, 2357 or recognised electrical apprenticeship.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
- Experience maintaining and repairing commercial or industrial electrical systems.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of electrical safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
- Previous NHS, healthcare, facilities management or critical infrastructure experience.
- Experience with generators, UPS systems, fire alarms, BMS and nurse call systems.
- Authorised Person (AP) or Competent Person (CP) qualifications.
- Knowledge of HTM06 and electrical safety in healthcare environments.
- Experience of permit-to-work systems.
- Inspection and testing qualifications.
Working Pattern
- Full-time position
- Participation in an on-call rota
- Flexibility to work overtime and out-of-hours when required
- One weekend day per month with a day off in lieu the following week
